How Is Portland Cement Made?
- There is a simple process and need some material to make Portland cement. The materials that are needed for this are limestone, silicon, fly ash, iron, and aluminium, etc.
- At first raw materials of calcium carbonate, silicon, iron oxide are crushed and mixed, then the crushed raw materials are placed into a rotating cement kiln.
- The kiln is horizontally placed whose one side is slightly up from the other side.
- The length of the kiln is approximately 90 meters and the diameter is 3 to 4 meters.
- The downside of the kiln set a high-temperature flame that’s temperature lies between 1450 to 1500° C
- On the other end of the kiln, the raw materials are placed. After the placing of raw materials when the kiln slowly rotted the raw materials goes downward and in contact with a high flame, the material converts into tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, and tricalcium aluminate.
- All materials that have come out from the kiln are solid. This solid form is known as clinker.
- At last, all clinker is finely ground to produce Portland cement.
- Some gypsum should be added to control the rate of hardening of the cement.

Why Is It Called Portland Cement?
Portland cement is a finely ground element that’s mixtures of limestone, and clay or limestone and shell. In 1824, English inventor Joseph Aspdin, noticing the similarities between this cement and Portland stone, invented Portland cement.
The limestone from Isle Portland, when mixed with water the calcium silicate, and the other components, started chemically reaction with them and heat of hydration start that makes the cement hard and strengthens.

Portland Cement Uses
Portland cement is fundamental for almost all concrete, highlighting its primary cement purpose in construction. Serving as the principal ingredient in most masonry mortars and renders, Portland cement used in construction is indispensable. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is the most commonly used type, known for its versatility and cement is used for various applications but there are other varieties available, such as white Portland cement.
How to Use Portland Cement?
- When mixed with water and aggregate (usually gravel and sand), it forms concrete, showcasing the diverse Portland cement applications. The cement is then cast into the desired shape and can become a load-bearing material when it dries.
- Mix Portland cement with sand and water to make mortar. Mortar is used to make bricklaying mortars, stuccos, plasters and grouts.
- Use up to 70 percent furnace slag to make blastfurnace cement. This blend is cheap because the primary ingredient is normally a waste product. Blastfurnace cement has a high final strength and good sulfate resistance but takes longer to harden and has lower tolerance for heat.
- Use up to 30 percent fly ash to make flyash cement. Flyash cement has good early and final strength but is only economical to make in volcanic areas where fly ash is readily available.
- Mix Portland cement with sulfoaliminates to make expansive cements. Sulfoaluminates tend to expand when they dry which counteracts the tendency of Portland cement to contract. This allows large slabs to be poured at once without using contraction joints.
